• The result of IAU100 NameExoWorlds China (Mainland) Naming Event was unveiled.

  • On December 21, the press conference of the result of IAU100 NameExoWorlds ("NEW" for short) China (Mainland) Naming Event sponsored by the Popularization Committee of Chinese Astronomical Society and organized by Beijing Planetarium kicked off at Beijing Planetarium. Wang Xiaofeng, curator of Beijing Planetarium, Zhu Jin, director of the Popularization Committee of Chinese Astronomical Society and honorary curator of Beijing Planetarium, and some members of the NEW-China (Mainland) national/regional committees attended the event. Cao Chen, member of NEW-China (Mainland) National/Regional Committee and associate professor of Shandong University, Weihai, presided over the conference and introduced the background and basic information of the event.

    At the conference, Dr. Zhao Fei from the National Astronomical Observatories, CAS introduced the discovery process of HD173416b on behalf of his research team. Zhu Jin announced that the fixed star and planet in this planetary system was officially named as Xihe and Wangshu respectively proposed by the Astronomy Club of Guangzhou No.6 Middle School after being approved and confirmed by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

    This event was well received by a large number of astrophiles across the country. A total of 67 effective naming proposals were submitted from colleges, universities, middle schools and primary schools, astronomy enthusiast groups, professional astronomers and senior astrophiles across the country in the past four months. The IAU100 NameExoWorlds China (Mainland) Naming Event, as an important global project in the IAU100 series of astronomical science and technology activities was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the IAU. It attracted hundreds of thousands of participants from 112 countries and regions. Wang Xiaofeng said that in the future, Beijing Planetarium will continue to actively carry out scientific communication and popular science education activities for the general public in close combination with the latest achievements in astronomical research, give strong support and response to IAU activities, and strive to build a high-quality astronomical scientific research and popular science platform in compliance with the international standards.
