The scientific research team of the Forensic appraisal center of Beijing Center for Physical & Chemical Analysis has established a brand-new age estimation method by applying microRNA (miRNA) histological analysis technology and machine learning method. The research paper Age estimation using bloodstain miRNAs based on massive parallel sequencing and machine learning: A pilot study, was published in TOP1 journal Forensic Science International: Genetics (Division I, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Impact Factor 4.88) in the field of forensic medicine, and applied for one invention patent.
For forensic material evidence analysis, age estimation has been a difficult problem for a long time. Beyond this, it has also played a significant role in the identification of human remains, suspect tracking, sentencing and conviction, etc. This method applies transcriptomics technology to age estimation, providing a new idea for solving the forensic problem of age estimation of trace material evidence.
