Beijing Research Center for Science of Science was a soft scientific research institute that was approved and set up by Beijing Municipality in 1984. For more than 20 years, it has been devoted to the public-interest soft scientific research and consultancy work in the fields of scientific and technological policy, statistic information, urban modernization, scientific and technological management, talent research, private-owned enterprise, reform of scientific and technological system and regional economy. It has provided strong support for the macro decision-making of Beijing Municipality in scientific and technological, economic and social development and is a new-type soft scientific and technological research and consultancy institute.

Since 1987, the Center has been undertaking the statistic work for the nearly 500 scientific and technological institutes entrusted by Ministry of Science and Technology and Science and Technology Commission of Beijing Municipality, the Top Six scientific and technological programs including 973, 863, programs to tackle key problems, and also for over 3000 national scientific and technological programs. So far, a massive and fertile statistics database has been established. Since the beginning of the tenth Five-year Plan, in order to provide policy-making grounds for Beijing Municipality, the Center has further strengthened the research on urban modernization. Till now the Center has compiled two reports on urban modernization, which have gained lots of positive social influence. Based on the requirements of further development, the Center was also named as Beijing Scientific and Technological Statistic Information and Beijing Modernization Research Center in June 2001 and September 2004 respectively.

Since its establishment, the Center has now undertaken more than 500 programs entrusted by governments of various levels and the society, and has published 12 monographs and 208 academic journals. 37 scientific and technological achievements have gained Scientific and Technological Progress Awards of Beijing Municipality.
